The heart chakra is associated with compassion, affection, and love. This forms your deepest connections to affection, tenderness, and endearment. This chakra embodies your ability to love unconditionally. It has the ability to move love through your life.
Located in the center of the chest (not the actual heart organ, but the entirety of the chest region) and is associated with the element air, the heart chakra is the forth primary chakra counting from the bottom of the spine in the traditional chakra system.
When the heart chakra is open and energy is flowing freely, you bare not only loving to others, you are also loving to yourself. You know when you need to say no and when you need care and self nurturing. Most of the world's spiritual traditions recognize love as the unifying force, the energy that is the most fundamental part of the universe and of ourselves. To open to love is to reach to the deepest places and connect with our true essence, our spirit and our soul.
The challenge of the heart chakra is very similar to the challenges of the Solar Plexus (the third chakra), only it communicates with us on a slightly more sophisticated level and is expand our love beyond our 'self'. It responds to inner thoughts, ideas, attitudes, inspiration and emotional needs. If all your chakra are aligned at this point, you will exude a compassionate energy, you will openly give unconditional love and you will form healthy relationships.
If this chakra is out of balance, and individual can suffer from jealousy, inability to forgive other, and even become the abuser or abused in relationships because love is power and some people use this power to control others. Abusers need that control due to their lower chakras being unable to generate love from family, friends and their self.
Physical dis-ease from a weak Anahata can manifest into circularity issues and blood disorders (due to being unable to circulate love through oneself and others), breast cancer and heart dis-ease (from holding onto heart break or pain associated with love), and illness in the lungs, diaphragm, and even suicide because the individual may not believe they deserve to 'breathe in loving, universal life force'.
Primary fears that form in an imbalanced heart chakra include being afraid to follow your heart , loneliness, and commitment issues. Throughout life, we have to grow and develop our sense of love, and have hope on our hearts.
