Understanding Chakra

Chakra throughout history

What are the Chakras?

The Chakras are the key centers of your personal energy field that reside along the spinal column. They interface with your physical body through important nerves plexuses and glands, therefore they are the gateway through which your spirit affects your physical body.

The word "Chakra" comes from the yoga related language, Sanscrit (an ancient Indo-European language of India, in which the Hindu scriptures and classical Indian epic poems and written and many northern Indian languages are derived.), and it means "wheel" or "spinning disk". This is a pretty apt name for these energy centers since each one spins like a mini-vortex. Still it may serve you better to think of each Chakra as a revolving door

Types of Chakras

In the most popularly accepted systems there are 7 Chakras that span vertically from the tailbone to the top of the head.
From the bottom up, there are:

1. Root: Located at the base of the spine; its associated with the elements of earth and the sense of smell. It governs your feet, legs, perineum and rectum, and relates to your most basic, Animalistic nature and your need to survive. Its Red, Which means, it's heavier and denser than the other Chakras, and it vibrates the most slowly.

2. Sacral: Your Sacral  Chakra is located in the center of your pelvis and is associated with the element water and the senseof taste. It's Orange and it governs the area from your pelvic bowl up to the navel. Including all your reproductive organs.

3. Solar Plexus: Located in the center of the torso above the navel just below where the ribs part, it's Yellow and it governs your midsection and all your digestive organs. Also, associated with the fire element and the sense of sight. Relates to your confidence, motivation, personal power, ego and identity.

4. Heart: Center of the chest, it governs the heart, lungs, and diaphragm, as well as the arms and hands. It's Green, and associates with the air element and sense of touch. Relates to compassion, gratitude, forgiveness, healing and love.

5. Throat:  The center of your throat governs the region from the base of the neck up to the ears. The jaw hinge is the key fifth chakra  joint, as it often gets locked and causes issues when the throat center is off balance.

6. Brow:  Located above and between the eyebrows and it governs the area from the sinuses up to the top of the head.
Related to light and the sixth sense.

7. Crown: Just above the center of the head. It's different from others, it's not embodied and therefore not subject to the duality of the material world. It's related to the pure consciousness, so it doesn't have many of the qualities of the Chakras. It isn't tied to any elements, physical sense, seed sound, of food, It's beyond all of those; Instead it relates to silence, stillness and abstinence.
