What are the Chakras?
The Chakras are the key centers of your personal energy field that reside along the spinal column. They interface with your physical body through important nerves plexuses and glands, therefore they are the gateway through which your spirit affects your physical body.
The word "Chakra" comes from the yoga related language, Sanscrit (an ancient Indo-European language of India, in which the Hindu scriptures and classical Indian epic poems and written and many northern Indian languages are derived.), and it means "wheel" or "spinning disk". This is a pretty apt name for these energy centers since each one spins like a mini-vortex. Still it may serve you better to think of each Chakra as a revolving door
Types of Chakras
In the most popularly accepted systems there are 7 Chakras that span vertically from the tailbone to the top of the head.
From the bottom up, there are:

7. Crown: Just above the center of the head. It's different from others, it's not embodied and therefore not subject to the duality of the material world. It's related to the pure consciousness, so it doesn't have many of the qualities of the Chakras. It isn't tied to any elements, physical sense, seed sound, of food, It's beyond all of those; Instead it relates to silence, stillness and abstinence.
